Mohawk & Hudson River Safe Haven: A Program for Pets with Homeless Owners

From the program brochure:

Protect yourself and protect your pets.

The Safe Haven program is a partnership between the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society, Unity House and Equinox Inc. The goal of the partnership is to eliminate barriers that prevent women from leaving abusers and to educate the community about the connection between animal abuse and domestic violence.

Did you know?

-One in four women are victims of domestic violence.

-Twenty-five percent of woman with pets said they would have left sooner if they had a place for their pet.

-Eighty-five percent of women and 83% of children entering domestic violence shelters discussed incidents of pet abuse in their family.

Mohawk & Hudson River will house a pet who has an owner without a home. Unfortunately, only pets may be provided with shelter. Pets are not eligible for adoption during their stay.

The mission of the Albany Damien Center is to provide individuals infected with HIV and AIDS and their families various types of support and assistance. Individuals who are affected by HIV and AIDS often feel isolated as a result of the stigma attached to their diseases. The Albany Damien Center serves as a safe place for individuals affected by HIV and AIDS to access support so that they do not become isolated. The Albany Damien Center provides individuals with services aimed to improve their social, physical, and emotional health. The central location, the Aids Community Center, provides individuals with a comfortable, home-like environment where they have access to mental health counseling, group meals, massage therapy, spiritual care, information about HIV, and recreational activities. The mission of the Albany Damien Center is to improve the overall quality of life for individuals and families affected by HIV and AIDS in a supportive, comfortable environment (D. Nangle, personal communication, March 9, 2011).
